Over 200 European delegates are expected to gather in Bulgaria next week to promote the diversity of families.

The meeting being held in Sofia is entitle “We are Family – Our families in Europe and the European family,” it is organised by the European branch of the International Lesbian and Gay Association (ILGA) and Bulgarian gay group Gemini.

Officials at the meeting will discuss issues of social and legal acceptance of diverse families and gay family models and will push for acceptance of gay families throughout Europe.

An ILGA spokesperson called it a great opportunity for the new EU state of Bulgaria to learn about gay rights, “We hope this will be a great opportunity not only for the Bulgarian LGBT activists and organisations to meet their colleagues from across Europe.

“And also that this will be a great chance for the Bulgarian officials to better understand LGBT issues and learn from other European experiences how to address these issues and build Bulgaria as an equal and inclusive society for all its citizens.”

The event takes place between the 26 and 29 October 2006.
