A gay burglar was caught by police after his victim recognised the “distinctive” way he walks, a court was told yesterday.

Lance Williams, 19, was one of three men who broke into the home of Nigel Jones and robbed him at knifepoint.

Only Williams was caught after Mr Jones remembered the “camp” way he was walking and pointed it out on CCTV in the Welsh town of Rhymney, which has a population of under 6,000.

Cardiff Crown Court heard that Williams, who admitted aggravated burglary, was dubbed “the only gay in the village.”

His lawyer, Eugene Egan said Williams was reacting to “being teased about his sexuality.

“He is an openly gay man and quite camp. The local youths all know what he is like and they tease him mercilessly.”

Michael Hammett, prosecuting, said: “Mr Jones was shown CCTV footage and recognised Williams. He knew him as a local youth who had a distinctive walk.”

The court heard that Mr Jones, 42, was stabbed in the back as burglars stole £400 from him, he avoided serious injuries.

Williams tried to disguise his face and make his voice deeper during the burglary, the court heard.

Williams, a factory worker, was jailed for five years.
