Yorkshire’s gay picnic celebrates 20th anniversary
Yorkshire once again demonstrated ‘there’s nowt as queer as folk’ last weekend, writes Paul Hunt.
Despite the Pennine showers, thousands of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people travelled to Huddersfield to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the Annual Pink Picnic.
Face Painting, Karaoke and live music was just some of the attractions on offer.
Featuring stalls and entertainment, the Pride event was hosted by drag artist Missdameana. Guest stars featured, an aged Tina Turner look-alike, complete with Zimmer frame and catheter bag, together with the Best Dressed Pet competition.
Now in its 20th year, It began in 1986 when a group of friends decided to have a picnic on the moors overlooking the scenic reservoir between Greenfield and Holmfirth in “The Last of the Summer Wine” country. It was fun and high-spirited so they did it again later the same year on a Bank Holiday Sunday.
The Pink Picnic was started as a way of raising money for AIDS charities and is now used to celebrate diversity in Yorkshire.
