Jersey’s health minister has backed lowering the age of consent for gay men.

The Channel Island’s Minister Stuart Syvret told States Members there were no medical reasons to oppose the legislation, which would lower the age from 18 to 16, the same as heterosexuals and UK same sex couples.

He warned that the current law may make criminals out of young gay people and put them off using health services.

The Parliament of the Channel Island’s Bailiwick of Jersey has asked the Corporate Affairs Scrutiny Panel to review proposals to lower the age of consent from 18 to 16.

The Home Affairs Committee said the case for reform was based on rulings of the European Court of Human Rights.
