Moscow Pride:One point that hasn’t been identified is that when we heard that the couts had upheld the Pride ban, we tried to arrange events which would not provoke the police, and my impression was that the police had agreed to our proposals and guaranteed our safety. So for example we were encouraged to go as individuals to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, rather than en masse, but when we got there the burial place wasd closed and we were surrouned by fascists. Also at a packed press conference a couple of hours before the events, we all signed up to a “Moscow Declaration of Human Rights”. I haven’t seen this on any news report yet. Many European politicians movingly spoke in favour of this document, including Volker Beck, who was later to be attcked by fascits and arrested by the police.Best Wishes,Derek Lennard.IDAHO-UKDerek Lennard.IDAHO-UK Co-ordinator.

As pointed out, this comes just a week after Russia assumed the Presidency of the Council of Europe, the human rights watchdog that guarantees freedom of expression and assembly.People should lobby their local MP immediately to raise this issue in Parliament and to demand that the Presidency of the Council of Europe be removed from Russia.I thought that Russia had learnt about and fought fascism in the past, clearly not a lesson that it has carried forward to the present. Now it is no better than Nazi Germany!

I am not a gay. But i do not have any prejudice against gays.I think that it is biological and psychological orientation that makes people homosexual. Now about Russia.Russia is one of the most ignorant, uncivilized, biased, paranoid, racist countries in the world.I know because i studied in Russia for 7 years. It is defenitely the most racist country in the world. In a country were every week atleast one non white is being killed or seriously attacked,if you wish for gay rights openely, then i think it is suicidal. In russia even human rights people who advicates equal rights for all races are being killed or attacked.Antifascists are being traced and killed.Authorities support racist organisations .If not for official support, nazi organisations will not survive. But in Russia antifascists are being targeted by police rather than racist neonazis. This is the reality of Russia. So your life is in your hands if you think to rebel against official policies of Russia. But most of the blame for growth of neo fascism in Russia must go for islamists who tried to destabilize russia during 90`s and even now. Both islamism and neonazism must be eradicated from the world if the world is to live peacefully.

This really is outrageous, and people around the world who believe in justice should join in condemning the Russian government for not only allowing this to happen, but for their own police to join forces with the bigots who attacked the pride rally.

One thing that I wonder about though, is the labeling of the thugs as “fascists”. Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov, who is quoted as saying Pride won’t happen while he lives, was a Communist Party member (maybe still is), and rose to power under the old Soviet system (see

Maybe some of the violent, bigoted street thugs are also more connected with communism than fascism? Of course the two are in many ways quite similar, but communism is often given a pass by people who associate evil strictly with fascism or Nazism, despite communism’s far bloodier historical track record in terms of number of people killed under communist regimes.
