A gay Lancashire politician has become the first MP to have a civil partnership.

David Borrow had a civil union at Preston Register Officer to John Garland, a children’s entertainer, in front of family and friends.

The ceremony had initially been cancelled due to fear of press intrusion, but went ahead last weekend, Mr Borrow, MP for South Ribble, told the Lancashire Evening Post, “We had a lovely ceremony at Preston Register Office.

“We really are delighted.

“We just had a small service which was attended by eight very close family so it was very private and just how we wanted it.

“We had a nice meal afterwards and we will be having a party in July to really celebrate it.”

Labour MP, Ben Bradshaw will be holding a civil ceremony with partner, Neal Dalgleish, who is a BBC Newsnight journalist, in June.
