I live in Canterbury, close to the Marlowe Theatre. I was horrified to read of the homophobic attacks suffered here by Stephen Gately, and would like to convey to him my deepest support. Such attacks are monstrous wherever they occur, but it’s particularly painful to find them happening in the town one lives in and loves. While I think (and like to think) that I’d always intervene in a homophobic attack if I encountered one, I’m especially sorry that I wasn’t around when Mr Gately was cornered outside the Marlowe Theatre, given that it’s “my patch.” I can assure you and him that I’d have had a serious go at those concerned. I can also assure you and Mr Gately that all of my neighbours whom I know (since I’ve lived here for 6 years, that’s most of them) are gay-friendly.
