Blackpool’s first “gay affirming” church will hold its inaugural meeting tonight.

Liberty Church, inspired by the Metropolitan Community Church (MCC) network, is looking to set up a gay and lesbian congregation.

Services will be held on Thursday and Sunday evenings at St Johns Anglican Church in Blackpool City Centre and will “welcome and affirm people of all sexual orientations as we believe God welcomes and affirms all people He has created,” according to their website.

The church describes itself as an “inclusive church that welcomes everyone who celebrates the diversity of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered (LGBT) people.

“LGBT people can worship, grow in faith and develop their relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ in a supportive environment.”

It is reportedly backed by gay entrepreneur Basil Newby who will advertise it in his businesses.

The MCC is a group of LGBT churches in areas including Manchester and Bournemouth.
