Gay group looks to be top of Australian politics

A South Australian gay group has called on the new parliament to put same sex couple recognition on the political agenda when it reconvenes tomorrow.

The new state parliament, which was elected last month giving the Australian Labour Party a landslide majority, is being asked to start from where it left off after a Same Sex Relationships Bill was the last debate in the previous sitting.

Matthew Loader from the Let’s Get Equal Campaign, said the bill should be first on the list, he said: “With such a convincing win, Labour has no excuse not to reintroduce the bill as a priority.

“South Australia is the only state that continues to discriminate against same sex partners.”

The lobby group also asked the government to consider a civil union and parent law for gay couples.
