Sir Elton John has warned George Michael that his pride will kill him if he does not get help.

He reacted to claims from the former Wham lead singer on the Parkinson show that he was the cause of his problems.

The gay star was appearing on US talk show, Ellen, he said: “They always know that I will be there to help them.

“Some of them don’t want the help, because they haven’t reached the point in their life where they’re going to ask for it.

“It took me 16 years you to ask for help. Pride can kill you,” Sir Elton said.

The Daily Mirror claimed after Michael’s remarks that a shocked Sir Elton asked a friend: “Did I crash George’s car? Was I found slumped over the wheel in Hyde Park? No.”

The unnamed friend told the newspaper: “Elton has been sober for 14 years and only ever sought to help George. He’s been there. He’s had his problems and accepted responsibility. He never blamed anyone.

“Elton is shocked and very upset he’s been dragged into this. He’s getting on with his life.

“George needs to start taking responsibility for his own actions and stop blaming everyone else. It’s a terrible shame.”
