A prison officer is facing punishment for arranging a screening of gay cowboy movie Brokeback Mountain.

The unnamed officer from a Norfolk prison in Massachusetts is accused of breaking prison guidelines because of the “graphic nature of sexually explicit scenes.”

Massachusetts Department of Correction spokeswoman Diane Wiffin, told Reuters news agency, “”It was not the subject matter. It was the graphic nature of sexually explicit scenes.”

Prison officials are expected to follow rules that require staff to review films in advance for violence, nudity or sex, as well as scenes involving assaults on prison staff.

The film was shown two days after its DVD release in the US.

Ms Wiffin gave no details of his punishment.

Brokeback Mountain was awarded three Oscars last month including best director for Ang Lee and best score.
