State promises protection to gays
A new law could be set up in Cincinnati to protect American gay and transgender people at work and home, the city council has revealed.
The Cincinnati City Council law committee met yesterday and heard examples of employee and property discrimination towards the gay community, a decision is expected to be made later today.
Gary Wright of Equality Cincinnati told US outlet 9News, “It’s very, very important that this be on the record, while it’s true that discrimination against gay people is less common than it once was, it still happens. As long as it happens once, we need to have those laws in place.”
Council member Laketa Cole said: “Right now, currently as the law stands someone can be discriminated against because of their sexual orientation. They can lose their job. If you’re going to fire someone, fire them on their merit not because of their sexual orientation,”
Meanwhile critics have placed an advert in a local paper criticising the committee for supporting the policy and asking that people should be allowed to vote on it.
