Boy George back in UK but faces prison in the USA over cocaine charge

Boy George, the 44-year-old former Culture Club front man returned to Britain today after appearing in court in New York where he was charged with possessing cocaine.

The star is accused of possessing 5g of cocaine that police say were found in 134 small packets in his flat in the Little Italy district of the city.

His lawyer Lou Freeman told reporters that Boy George “does not know where it came from. He’s a very social person. He has a lot of people in his apartment.”

The singer was arrested during the early hours of Friday evening after calling police to report a burglary.

NYPD detective Eric Crisafi claimed that Boy George was staggering around was in what he believed to be a “drugged stupor”. A woman in the flat, told officers that she believed that there was more of the drug in the apartment.

During the court hearing, prosecutors asked for bail of $3000 but threw out the request on the grounds that it was Boy George who called the police in the first place.

The gay singer turned DJ must return to New York for a further hearing on December 19th. If convicted, he will face a maximum sentence of 15 years behind bars.
